WORKSHOP SCHEDULE

Workshop Schedule: Jo has carefully crafted an amazing programme for our dance community to learn, discover, be challenged, and have fun! Jo has specified the workshop times will enable a deeper dive into the content to maximise learning. Yay!

Workshop Level: Attendees will get the most out of this weekend if they have had prior experience swing dancing either via classes, workshops, and/or social swing dancing.

All workshops are Open Level that progressively become more challenging. Jo sets up workshops with multiple challenges per exercise so as to not overwhelm the new dancers whilst challenging the higher level dancers. It's a rowdy-good time!

Workshop Details: Please arrive 20 - 30 minutes before the workshop event starts. It gives you a chance to meet and greet, register, and change shoes. This also enables Jo Hoffberg to start teaching on time with no interruptions after the workshop has begun. We understand that road traffic might be busy, ensure that you leave a bit early to allow for travel time to the venue. Bring a drink bottle, wear comfortable clothes you can move in and wear shoes with a bit of slip in them.

  • Welcome to Te-Whanganui-a-Tara, Aotearoa’s eclectic capital city! If you are planning to come from out of town, here’s a handy guide and tips for an easy weekend from your friendly locals.

    Staying in the City?

It’s about a 20-25 minute drive along the motorway to the venue in Lower Hutt. Sharing an Uber with your friends is okay, or you could jump in for a ride with an attendee who is driving in from Wellington. Traffic is fairly light in the early mornings going out to the Hutt and late at night coming back into the city, however might build around the 4pm - 5pm time if you plan on returning to the city to get ready to go back for the evening event.

    Staying in the Hutt?

You’re already there! Petone and Lower Hutt have a variety of accommodation options with a very short Uber ride to the event. There are great food places in Petone and Lower Hutt.

If you have an early Monday flight, consider staying back in the city or at the airport on Sunday night to avoid the motorway traffic on Monday morning. A friendly local could give you a ride back to the city after the Sunday event. The airport is an easy drive from the city.

    Getting out to the Hutt

There is an airport bus to the city and train/bus out to Petone/Lower Hutt. The stations are close to the venue and a variety of accommodation options too. The airport has loads of cars for hire too, if you go for that option.

    Live in the North Island?

Did someone say ROAD TRIP?! Consider a lovely drive down to Wellington.

    Queensgate Mall

Is very close. Either a 15 minute walk or a 2 minute drive from the venue. There is a supermarket and a variety of food / coffee places.

Now for the elephant in the dance studio…..The WELLINGTON WEATHER…. Avoid umbrellas if it’s windy, bring a LONG waterproof raincoat with a hood, pack the hairspray, sun glasses- and just in case woolly gloves… really, anything could happen! Don’t worry, the Event Committee has you covered as the workshop event is indoors in one location- with close car parking too!

Sunday 4th August | Porirua Club: 1 Lodge Place, Porirua. | 6pm - 8pm

Every month on Sunday evenings, the Liberty Swing Big Band plays at the Porirua Club. It's about a 25 minute drive away from the workshop venue. The band starts at 6pm and finishes at 8pm.

A current member of the Porirua Club (someone from Sugarfoot Stomp or another friendly local dancer) is able to admit and sign in up to 8 guests from our workshop event.

So we can plan the number of attendees that need signing in, please indicate if you are keen to join us for the last social dance when you register.

BIO FOR JO HOFFBERG

Jo Hoffberg is a force of nature. She is an international choreographer, a highly decorated competitor, a thoughtful mentor, a wearer of high-waist pants, and is best known for her teaching.

She has taught Lindy Hop, Charleston, Vernacular Jazz, Aerials, Competition Prep, and Weekend Intensives both nationally and abroad since 2007.

Her love and appreciation for various Black American art forms allows her to bring innovative versatility to the dance floor while simultaneously respecting the roots.

Her demand as an instructor, performer, and competitor has taken her to hundreds of festivals spanning 35 countries and five continents. After having spent many years prioritizing Lead & Follow, Jo now enjoys exploring improvisation, musicality, body awareness, and self-expression, which is apparent every time she steps on the dance floor (or posts videos of herself dancing in her living room). Incredibly passionate about teaching the solo side of partner dancing, Jo is super-freaking excited about helping students find their voice in this dance! Her motto: possibilities over perfection.

She has been honored for her contributions by being inducted into the 2012 Rising Star California Swing Dance Hall of Fame, 2014 Camp Hollywood Hall of Fame, and 2022 Shining Star California Swing Dance Hall.

She holds countless titles from such prominent competitions as: The American Lindy Hop Championships, European Swing Dance Championships, International Lindy Hop Championships, National Jitterbug Championships, U.S. Open Swing Dance Championships, Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown, and Lone Star Championships - to name a few. Lady Hoffberg has been interviewed for Swing Dancer Magazine, "The Track" podcast, cover of Swing Magasinet om Swingdans, and guest-starred in Yehoodi broadcast of ILHC.

As a community leader, she is shining the spotlight on the next generation by consistently competing in Pro/Ams at ILHC, mentoring the next generation of instructors, and supporting deeper structural changes in the community - check out her online dance school to see this in action!!

She is continuing to invest in her personal dance education by regularly challenging herself in other genres of dance, and believes to be a good teacher you must also be a good student.
