Swing dancing is an umbrella term for a large group of social dance styles originating from the 1920s to 1940s jazz era.

Think Charleston, Lindy Hop, Collegiate Shag, Blues, Solo Jazz just to name a few!

Find out about the styles Sugarfoot Stomp Members facilitate.

Not only is swing a fun and eclectic social dance, it has a rich and deep cultural heritage. While its black roots are old, it’s a modern dance style danced globally. Learn more about the origins of swing dancing.

  • At its heart, swing dancing is a social dance! Sugarfoot Stomp Members believe the goal of learning to swing dance is to build your confidence and dance vocabulary so you can take what you've learned and bust it out on the social dance floor!

No matter your level or experience dancing, swing dance is meant to be shared, and what better way to do that than to live music at one of Wellington's fantastic bars or event spaces?

Sugarfoot Stomp Members facilitate events around the Wellington region, with some of the capital's best jazz musicians. Follow us on Facebook so you can keep up to date with what's going on near you!

    Interested in Joining?

The Sugarfoot Stomp Performance Troupe is keen to expand with swing dancers who are experienced at a solid intermediate level and would like to take the next step to committed advanced swing dancing.

You will need to already be familiar with group solo dances such as the Shim Sham, The Big Apple, Tranky Doo…

Learning solo and partnered choreography for performances is the main focus, however, on occasion the troupe will dive into advanced skills and basic drills e.g. swing outs.

This is NOT a class. Troupe participants are in charge of their own dance goals. Troupe members may need to practice outside of the sessions to master the material covered in the sessions.

Contact kiaora@sugarfootstomp.co.nz if you are keen to book an audition spot.

The Troupe trains every Saturday from 10 am - 12 pm (2 hours) in 12-week blocks and shares the cost of the studio hire. February to December.

Troupe participants will need to join as a Sugarfoot Stomp Member.
