Sugarfoot Stomp
A collective of passionate people supporting dancers and musicians!
Sugarfoot Stomp Incorporated is a club and community resource, used by its members to facilitate the Black American Cultural Art Form of Swing Dancing that connects & grows the talented Wellington community of dancers and musicians.
Swing Dancing is an umbrella term for a group of social dance styles originating from the 1920s to 1940s jazz era, including Charleston, Lindy Hop, Collegiate Shag, Blues, and Solo Jazz.
It is a fun and eclectic family of social dances with rich cultural heritage that has spread throughout the world!

Sugarfoot Stomp is a dance club run by members, for its members and the wider Wellington swing dance community.
Our mission is to promote swing dancing – a Black American Cultural Art Form – in the Wellington region by educating the public through classes, events, and performances. We keep people connected face-to-face through experiencing the joys of vintage solo and partnered swing dancing.
Members help Sugarfoot Stomp promote its mission by maintaining Registered Charitable Status, contributing to the society’s financial stability, and helping to organise and run classes and events!
Simply put: If you like Sugarfoot Stomp classes and events, the best way to support us is to become a member!
In addition, membership comes with benefits throughout the year. Learn about member benefits here.

Sugarfoot Stomp Members facilitate a number of popular swing dances, including Lindy Hop, Collegiate Shag, Authentic Solo Jazz, and Blues. We're always looking to add more styles as Sugarfoot Stomp grows.
Occasionally, we also host instructors from other dance organisations, as well as international instructors. For example, see our previous event with the amazing Jo Hoffberg!

At its heart, swing dancing is a social dance! The goal of our classes and workshops are to build your skills and confidence to bust out your moves on the social dance floor! No matter your level or experience dancing, swing dance is meant to be shared.
Sugarfoot Stomp regularly hosts social dancing events, DJ’d by our members or with live music by the capital’s best jazz musicians! Keep an eye on our Events page and follow us on Facebook to keep up to date with what's going on near you!
In addition, Wellington has a wealth of live jazz music throughout the city. You’ll often spot our members on the dance floor at these gigs!

Interested in Joining the Performance Troupe?
The Sugarfoot Stomp Performance Troupe is keen to expand with swing dancers who are experienced at an intermediate level or above and are committed to taking the next step to advanced swing dancing. Ideally, you will be familiar with routines such as the Shim Sham, The Big Apple, or the Tranky Doo.
The troupe trains every Sunday from 11 am – 1 pm. Troupe members shares the cost of the studio hire. Learning solo and partnered choreography for performances is the main focus. However, on occasion, the troupe will dive into advanced skills and basic drills.
Troupe practice is NOT a class. Troupe participants are in charge of their own dance goals, and they may need to practice outside of the sessions to master the material.
All troupe participants need to join as a Sugarfoot Stomp Member.
